First Generation Students

Colorado School of Mines is dedicated to validating and uplifting the experiences of first-generation students.

Welcome to our hub for first-generation college student support at Mines. We know that every student’s experience is unique, shaped by a variety of personal and academic factors. Our goal is to provide resources, tools, and opportunities to help you navigate college life and define success on your own terms—with the support of your family and community.

Vision

MEP at Mines will be a place where first-generation college students are supported, encouraged, and equipped to thrive throughout their academic journey and beyond.

Am I First-Gen?

There are many ways to define what it means to be a first-generation college student, and every student’s path is unique. At Mines, you may be considered first-generation if any of the following apply: one or both of your parents did not complete a 4-year college degree; they attended college but did not graduate; they went to a community college, technical school, or a non–4-year institution abroad; your siblings or other relatives earned a degree, but your parents did not; or your parents attended college, but you lived without them for more than half of your life. While the resources listed below focus on supporting first-generation students, our services and resources are open to anyone who finds them helpful.
